Man eludes police after meth lab arrest

BIRMINGHAM - Authorities continued to search Sunday for a 28-year-old Sumiton man who fled in a police car in one of multiple escapes after being arrested in a weekend meth lab bust.

Officials thought they had cornered Christopher Laye in a mobile home and spent eight hours trying to talk him out before discovering the home was empty Saturday.

Multiple burn victims, one critical, after lab explosion

Three men burned Thursday night in an alleged meth lab explosion at a Christian County mobile home remained in critical condition on Sunday, Christian County Sheriff Joey Kyle said Sunday evening.

One, who suffered second- and third-degree burns over his entire body, has been given a 30 percent chance of survival, Kyle said. The two other men also were badly burned, he added.

Kyle said area law enforcement officers are familiar with the trailer where the explosion happened. Last year authorities executed a search warrant there.

After the fire, they found evidence that meth was being manufactured in the trailer, the sheriff said.

The sheriff said it could be some time before charges are filed against the men, mainly because of their injuries.

"We're going to have to talk to all three of them, and right now they're not in any physical condition to talk," Kyle said.
