The situation: After two years of
sudden growth in the clandestine meth-
amphetamine business, Mississippi
became the second state in the union --
with Oregon -- to make medications
containing meth-precursor pseudo-
ephedrine prescription-only. The law
went into effect July 1, 2010 but the
year ended as a record-setter for lab
interdictions anyway. Officers say meth-
lab busts from July 2010 to February
2011 were down 70% from the same
period a year prior. However, cooks in
Mississippi need only drive to a
neighboring state for the pseudoe-
phedrine. According to Reuters, as
many as 98% of the meth labs seized
since July were using pseudoephedrine purchased from another state.
