Pharmacies yet to link to pseudoephedrine database
MO - Like others in Missouri, several pharmacies in Cape Girardeau and Jackson have yet to connect to a statewide database that tracks the sale of pseudoephedrine products. The new electronic tracking database went online Sept. 28 and requires pharmacists to enter information, such as name, date of birth and signature, of people purchasing products containing pseudoephedrine, a key component in making methamphetamine. The database is intended to prevent buyers from purchasing more than the maximum amount of pseudoephedrine allowed by Missouri law. Cape Girardeau County has seen a spike in cold-medicine sales the last few months, according to the Southeast Missouri Drug Task Force. It's also going to be an important tool for police seeking to arrest people before they begin making the illegal drug, according to task force supervisor Kevin Glaser.
Man on meth attempts murder, terrorizes neighborhood
CA - A Willows man is at Glenn Medical Center under double guard today after allegedly threatening Wednesday morning to kill a Willows woman and harm police with an explosive device, while high on methamphetamine. For authorities to take the man into custody, ending a tense 30-minute stand-off, they had to subdue him with two bean bag rounds, pepper spray bullets and a Taser stun gun. Glenn County Sheriff Larry Jones said the strange incident began when the suspect, Timothy J. Gurule, 44, called the 44-year-old woman early Wednesday morning, then shortly before 10 a.m. showed up at her home in the 500 block of Fourth Street in northwest Willows, armed with knives and a hammer.
Border patrol agents make big drug bust
AZ - U.S. Border Patrol agents seized several bundles of methamphetamine Tuesday at the Interstate 8 checkpoint east of Yuma. Federal agents ordered the driver of a pickup truck towing a sedan to move to a secondary inspection after a canine team alerted agents. Agents discovered a hidden compartment behind the rear seat that contained nine foil-wrapped packages of methamphetamine. Agents also discovered an additional six bundles of meth hidden inside a passenger door panel. Border Patrol agents seized a total of 15 bundles of meth with an estimated street value of $696,000.
Online meth map shows increase in mobile labs
MO - The Springfield Police Department's new meth map shows those who make it don't need a house to do it. The department is mapping out homes or locations of meth lab arrests and discoveries. This year fifty-five-percent of the time police found meth making materials dumped out in the open. Police say mobile meth labs make it more difficult to catch crooks in the act. Police found more meth labs so far this year than any year since 2005. Business owner Dustin Osborn's routine check around the outside of his business led to a disturbing discovery. "I didn't get too close I went off and called police," Osborn said. "This was my first mobile meth lab and hopefully my last."
Illegal meth activities at medical marijuana dispensaries
CA - Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies have seized marijuana and conducted raids at 16 locations across Southern California. Sheriff's officials say 11 people were arrested on suspicion of drug dealing Wednesday but their names were not released. Capt. Ralph Ornelas says the raids targeted a single group of criminals illegally making and selling cocaine, meth and marijuana at medical marijuana dispensaries.
