ment of Justice, meth is the primary drug threat to the Illinois State Police

prevalence in the Chicago area. The state recently
ranked fourth in meth-related arrests. Estimates
place the cost of the meth epidemic at about $2
billion per year when crime, loss of productivity
incarcerations and the impact on families and
children are taken into account. Illinois has
joined the growing list of "Meth Project" states
that use graphic advertising vehicles to help
sway youth from using the drug.
Meth in Illinois
-- As in many states, laws limiting access to the meth
precursor pseudoephedrine cut the number of illegal labs
busted by law enforcement. The numbers have begun
going up in the past few year, however:

-- Illinois has seen a dip in the number of methamphetamine admissions to drug treatment and also in the percentage of all treatment admissions that are for meth. Here, as in many regions, treatment admissions have been cut due to funding shortfalls.

-- The amount of methamphetamine seized by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has bounced up in the past two years. Seizures are listed in kilograms (note: 1 Kg. - 2.2 lbs.)

Speaking of meth
“Only when we take an aggressive stand against teen drug use, can we begin to see the positive
impact outreach efforts like this project can have on a community. It’s a startling statistic to
realize almost 4% of Illinois high schoolers use methamphetamines.”
