NATIONAL METHAMPHETAMINE TRAINING & TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE CENTER
"Meth Inside Out"
(from UCLA Intigrated Substance Abuse Program)
Q: What are the first steps in getting meth treatment?
A: As with any addiction, the big first step to getting clean is the admission that there is a problem and a desire to get rid of it.
Your decision may be helped along by a thorough screening by treatment professionals who practice in your area. Most treatment facilities offer free assessments or screenings.
In most cases, a screening will give treatment providers a full picture of you and your addiction. From that base a course of treatment can be prescribed.
Critical to any screening is absolute honesty. If an addict does not provide complete and/or honest answers, the treatment he/she receives may not be appropriate to the severity of the problem.
Here is some of the information treatment facilities will want to know in order to prescribe the right program for you. (Note: The following information is distilled from a 12-page document used as part of a drug-court treatment program (all information is given voluntarily):
- What are your current signs of withdrawal
- Describe your current state of function/disfunction with your withdrawal
- Describe any and all medical conditons or complications and history with doctors
- List all prescription medications you are taking
- Reveal any history of abuse, suicidal or homicidal incidents or thoughts
- Amount of money you spend on alcohol or illicit drugs
- A complete personal and family history of mental conditions or complications
- Fully describe your readiness to change behaviors
- A full substance abuse history
- Amount of illicit substances you used each day of the past week
- Any history of treatment and any success or relapse as a result of that treatment
