Q: How much does treatment cost?

A: Unfortunately there is no single answer for this question.

Methamphetamine treatment is done in a number of environments for varied periods of time. Public facilities tend to cost less than private ones. Outpatient treatment costs less than residential treatment.

Public or faith-based treatment centers sometimes offer outpatient treatment at no cost to those who might otherwise be unable to pay.

Drug court clients generally are ordered to pay fees for their court and treatment expenses. Those fees can run from several hundred dollars to about $2,000.

Private inpatient facilities can cost many thousands of dollars -- some more than $1,000 per day. Patients who feel they need inpatient treatment should investigate fees before they seek admission.

Types of payment and amount of fees differ greatly throughout the treatment landscape (see chart above). More than half the treatment facilities surveyed by the government in 2006 said they will waive fees for those who cannot pay. More than 60% said they offered a sliding fee scale based on clients' income.

Again, some advance research can help clients find both the care the need and a fee structure they can live with.
