Drug czar: 'War on drugs' can only be won with prevention, treatment
When the nation's drug czar visited Friday, the recovering addicts at Tuerk House in West Baltimore did a little showing off. Those taking the culinary jobs training course whipped up a lavish breakfast. Those in the landscaping and maintenance program spruced up the grounds. "It's been a blessing to me," Mack Campbell, 56, said of the program that he hopes will finally break his personal cycle of addiction, imprisonment and relapse. "I'm learning how to live without drugs." Inside, Gil Kerlikowske was offering much the same message — but on a broader level. The director of the Office of National Drug Control policy, who took office last year, was promoting the Obama administration's strategy of focusing on prevention and treatment rather than solely arrest and incarceration.
Shooting victim high on meth, had loaded gun when killed
WA - Matthew James Netter was dangerously high on methamphetamine and pulled a loaded pistol on a Poulsbo police officer when he was shot and killed during a July traffic stop. Poulsbo officer Darrel Moore shot Netter, 23, of Bremerton, eight times at point blank range, until Netter stopped moving, according to a report issued Friday by Kitsap County Prosecuting Attorney Russell Hauge. Hauge found that Moore was "absolutely justified" in his use of force during the stop near Silverdale's Whaling Days festival July 23.
Police chase leads to meth lab, officer injured during pursuit
WV - When South Charleston Police attempted to pull over a possibly stolen sport utility vehicle Sunday night, the vehicle’s driver refused to stop. According to police, as the vehicle fled, the passengers in the GMC Jimmy began throwing meth making materials out of the car. While crossing the Dunbar toll bridge a backpack containing an active meth lab was thrown from the vehicle and landed on the hood of one of the pursuing police cruisers. Officers recovered the backpack meth lab and brought it to the Dunbar Police Department. While the vehicle was in the Cross Lanes area, officers believe the suspects may have thrown a gun out of the vehicle.
