Youth drug use in Indiana mostly down
Bloomington, IN - Drug use by Indiana sixth through 12th graders continues to decline but findings from the 19th Annual Survey of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Use by Indiana Children and Adolescents, conducted by the Indiana Prevention Resource Center at Indiana University Bloomington and funded by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration's Division of Mental Health and Addiction, also pointed to an increase in marijuana use.
Dad, admitted meth addict, accused of critically injuring newborn
Chandler, AZ - A 3-week-old girl is not expected to survive the severe trauma police say was caused by her father, an admitted methamphetamine addict who claimed he accidentally poked the girl in the eye and tripped, dropping her on the floor of their Chandler home.
Police said the multiple skull fractures and long list of other gruesome injuries were not consistent with Brian Mark Hopf's account of what happened. The baby has other injuries indicating sexual abuse, according to court documents.
Boy, 3, tests positive for meth
Norfolk, NE - Authorities say they've taken over custody of a 3-year-old Norfolk boy and arrested his mom because he tested positive for methamphetamine.
Norfolk Police Capt. Leon Chapman says 31-year-old Edna Sarmiento was arrested on charges including felony child abuse.
The child was turned over to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
Chapman says Sarmiento's other three children have been out of state, visiting their father.
