Meth worth $1.7 million found in car
TX - A traffic stop in Jarrell resulted in the largest methamphetamine bust in the history of the Williamson County Sheriff's Department. William Joseph Silva, 27, is in the county jail charged with drug possession. Detectives say they discovered 42 pounds of methamphetamine, worth $1.7 million, hidden in his car. A deputy stopped him on I-35 around 4 p.m. Wednesday, after noticing that Silva was hesitant to pass him. When he finally did, the deputy says Silva seemed nervous and pulled him over. He consented to a search, and a drug dog found the meth. Silva is a U.S. citizen who has been living in Mexico. If convicted, Silva faces 15 years to life in prison.
Teen gets one year prison for role in meth lab
WI - A Green Bay teenager will spend at least a year in prison for his role in a meth-making operation. Erik Guyette, 19, of Lenwood Avenue was sentenced in Brown County Circuit Court today to a year in prison, and two years of extended supervision, for possession of methamphetamine. Judge Mark Warpinski also sentenced Guyette to seven years for the manufacture and distribution of the drug, but stayed the sentence provided Guyette avoids further trouble with the law.
Activist believes that illegal drug might cure addiction
MN - In a basement corner of the new Science Teaching and Student Services Building approximately 30 students gathered to hear Dana Beal, a longtime advocate of legalizing marijuana, speak on behalf of another drug that is currently illegal. He was advocating for the drug Ibogaine, and credited it with the ability to heal a drug or alcohol addictions after a single dose. But with few studies to support Beal’s claims, some students were left wondering. Ibogaine is currently legal in some parts of the Netherlands, Canada and Mexico, but is considered a schedule one drug in the United States by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), which means it is illegal to possess it under any circumstances.
