Mexico extradites record 100 people to US
Mexico City - Mexico has extradited a record number of criminal suspects to the United States this year, underscoring a dramatic improvement in cross-border law enforcement cooperation - and an urgent attempt to clean up the country's crime-addled prisons.
Authorities reached the historic 100-person mark with the shipment north of 11 crime fugitives on Sunday, the eve of a visit by Mexican Attorney General Arturo Chavez to Washington. Previously, the most suspects sent from Mexico to the U.S. in a year was 95, the number extradited in 2008.
Woman defrauded state to buy meth
Lihu'e, HI - A woman whom prosecutors said defrauded the state out of more than $18,000 and used the money to buy crystal methamphetamine, or ice, was sentenced to a year in prison on theft charges.
Tracy Ewing, also known as Tracy Pope, was charged with three counts of second-degree theft and three counts of unsworn falsification for lying on state forms to get financial assistance when she was also getting income from jobs she held, county Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Lauren McDowell said.
