Oklahoma introduces meth-fighting pharmacy rules
OK - The Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics has implemented new initiatives aimed at curbing the illicit use of pseudoephedrine, the key ingredient for manufacturing methamphetamine. As of November 1st, a birth date will be required, in addition to full name and a state-issued identification number for purchasing pseudoephedrine at pharmacies.
Meth still one of top drugs in Iowa
IA - While alcohol is still Iowa’s No. 1 intoxicant, the two most abused illicit drugs in the Hawkeye State are marijuana and methamphetamine, according to a report released Monday by the Iowa Office of Drug Control Policy.
“Based on primary substance abuse treatment admission data from the Iowa Department of Public Health, alcohol accounts for about 61 percent of all clients, followed by 23 percent who are there primarily for marijuana and almost 8 percent mainly for meth,” said Gary Kendell, Iowa’s drug policy coordinator and director of the Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy.
Cold medicine bill passes in Missouri county
Hillsboro, MO - An effort to curb methamphetamine labs by requiring prescriptions for select cold and allergy medications cleared the first round of approvals Monday in Jefferson County.
County executives voted unanimously to require prescriptions for over-the-counter medications containing the decongestant pseudoephedrine, which doubles as the main ingredient in meth. It's the first of three readings the bill must pass before it can become law.
