Rehab funding affected by federal focus on meth
Polk County, IA - A program used to treat drug addicts on the verge of prison terms has lost its federal financing because of an unexplained rules change by the U.S. Department of Justice, Polk County officials said Tuesday.
Jail-based alcohol and other drug treatment programs in Polk, Scott, Story and Woodbury counties all face uncertain futures because federal officials decided last week to target treatment money at addicts who use only methamphetamine.
Pipe bombs found in home with meth lab
OK - Authorities evacuated several neighboring houses after finding at least two pipe bombs and a methamphetamine lab at a house in north Tulsa County.
An anonymous person phoned authorities about 3 p.m. to report suspicious activity at a house in the 5900 block of North Lewis Avenue, Deputy Catherine Curtin said.
The Tulsa Police Department’s bomb squad sent its robot into the house, and it used its water cannon several times to dismantle the pipe bombs, Sheriff’s Sgt. Bob Darby said.
Man arrested for meth caves makes plea deal
Kalamazoo, MI - A Kalamazoo man has skipped his trial on meth charges and is headed straight to sentencing.
Ronald Jenkins agreed to a plea deal. He'll now be sentenced for two counts of maintaining a meth lab instead of three, along with being a habitual offender.
Officers busted Jenkins cooking meth in an underground cave back in December.
They say he also ran a similar operation near the old Georgia Pacific Paper Plant.
He'll be sentenced next week.
